Technology for All

A non-profitable organisation, IMSOM depends on volunteers, many of whom are older demographics. To keep its online true to its evolving visual style, IMSOM needed a web application that's both flexible and easy to use.

Backend Design

User Management

The interface enables non-technical, older committee members to easily navigate the interface and makes user data easy to access and modify. Font size, color contrast, and layout all follow WCAG 2.1, so it’s easy on the eyes and easy to use.

Event Management

The event page breaks down info and actions into simple, step-by-step sections, making it easier for elderly users to complete tasks.

A clean layout and clear typography keep the experience smooth frustration-free.

Event Management

Dynamic poster generation and preview feature enables users to make adjustments.

How did the solution form?

Behind the scenes

To design a web application for IMSOM's backend, we examined the organisations workflows and needs. Engaging in in-depth discussions with the organizing committee, we began to see problems that they struggled the most with.

Understanding Stakeholders

Organiser Interviews : 4

Key Takeaways

1

Mobile-First Experience

current cognitive load on IMSOM's organising committee to manage technology

2

Simple & Transparent Ticketing

different design language due to different volunteers working on posts and such

3

Inconsistent Brand Language

each time they had to update something they needed to hardcode change it.

Design Decisions

After gathering key insights, I reimagined the digital experience with a clear challenge: create a system that feels as familiar as IMSOM’s offline processes while staying accessible to the elderly.

I structured the backend to reflect the offline ticket booking process, making it feel familiar and intuitive for the organizing committee.

The CMS had to be user-friendly for elderly organizers to update content without any expertise.

Reflections

Working on the imsom backend project back in 2023 taught me a great deal about accessibility and WCAG compliance while designing for a user group that is often overlooked, which broadened my understanding of systems thinking and the lasting impact of design decisions. Working in an agile environment meant we delivered the backend system first while simultaneously refining the website, which led to an iterative process without the benefit of pre-approved wireframes. This ever-expanding scope, combined with the need to fit design adjustments into pre-built modules, ultimately turned what could have been limitations into opportunities for creativity and innovation.
